Art galleries in Southwest Florida display works of local, regional and international artists and artisans from contemporary to traditional, covering a wide range of media, styles and techniques. The following listing is a sample of what the area art scene has to offer. Listings are only as current as information provided to us by the galleries. As hours tend to fluctuate, it's wise to phone ahead. Note: Submissions for this column must be received by noon Monday for publication in the coming Friday's Showcase.


OPENINGS AND EVENTS


Art League of Marco Island at the Beth Rhodes Center for Art Education will feature "Out of Order," a multi-medium exhibition that includes acrylics, trompe l'oeil, oils and watercolors, from Feb. 29 through March 31. "Scholarship Applicants," featuring works by 11th and 12th grade Collier County students, can be seen April 4 through 8, followed by "A Contemporary Flair," a mixed-media show from April 11 through 29. Art Studio on Shirley is the working studio for artists Barbara Groenteman, who specializes in realistic tropical watercolors; painter Karen Stone, who specializes in vibrant impressionist pastels; and Renate Nothmann, who presents watercolor and oil paintings. Atelier Lizio Naples is a working studio established by Jo-Ann Lizio featuring Lizio's abstract expressionist works. A solo exhibition of abstract works by international artist Maciek von Ato will be unveiled at an opening reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Feb. 21. The show can be seen through Feb. 28. Darvish Collection Gallery of Fine Art is known for realism and impressionism. Displayed in seven rooms the works of 25 nationally and internationally known contemporary artists, along with 19th and early 20th century American and European masters. A meet-the-artist reception takes place from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 29, to introduce a new major exhibition by Troy Aker, American impressionist painter. Davis/Keil Fine Art will feature two exhibitions beginning Feb. 24, "Hung Lui: La Ran Portraits" and "Folk Art." A show featuring works by Chris Pate with inspiration from Adolf Gottlieb, Jules Olitski and Kenneth Noland can be seen from March 9 through 27. DeBruyne Fine Art Gallery represents 19th and 20th century European and American painters, as well as contemporary painters and sculptors. Edward Lupper and Carol Sadowski's whimsical animals and tropical scenes will be showcased as of March 11. Gallery Victoria offers contemporary paintings and stone sculpture. From March 5 through 22, the gallery will feature its Artists of Distinction exhibition which includes acrylic and mixed media paintings by Lynn Loscutoff and acrylic and oil paintings by Catherine Wolf. The artists won prizes in Artescape Naples 2003, a national painting competition. An opening reception takes place from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, March 5, and the artist will paint on premises from noon to 3:45 p.m. March 13. A solo exhibition of recent oil paintings by Victoria Brown can be seen March 20 through 26. A meet-the-artist reception is set for 5 to 7:30 p.m. March 20. Gardner-Colby Gallery I is a traditional fine art gallery, showcasing the talents of more than 20 contemporary painters and sculptors and featuring representational Old Florida landscapes, still lifes and figurative works. From Feb. 20 through 29, the gallery will feature its seventh annual one-man show which highlights works by Frank P. Corso. Named "Peaceful Solitude," the exhibition includes the artist's "portraits" of the landscapes of Southwest Florida including the Everglades. Kevin Sloan's one-man show opens March 4, followed by "Figurative Works," featuring artists Kim English and Jove Wang, on March 25. Harmon-Meek Gallery is now open in the TIB Financial Centre. An exhibition of works by Robert Vickrey will be featured from Feb. 22 through March 6. Kensington Arts at 604 Fifth Ave. S. will introduce world renowned pop artist Peter Max's newest exhibition, "Colors of a Better World," this weekend. Max will be on hand for two meet-the-artists receptions set for 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday. The exhibit can also be seen throughout the weekend, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. Location: 604 Fifth Ave. S. 263-2994.

Marianne Friedland Gallery features a selection of original works by Tom Wesselman, Roy Lichtenstein, James Rosenquist, Jim Dine, Wolf Kahn, Janet Fish and Jules Olitski. An exhibition of new paintings and master prints by contemporary still life artist Janet Fish continues through March 3. In addition, inventory includes original etchings, lithographs, aquatints and screenprints by a variety of artists including Wolf Kahn, Helen Frankenthaler and Larry Rivers. New River Fine Art, Naples, specializes in American and European impressionist, modern and contemporary paintings, works on paper and sculpture. Inventory includes Dali, Hart, Leestemaker, Camille Pissarro and his descendants and others. "The Impressions" opens with a champagne reception from 6 to 9 p.m. today, Feb. 20; RSVP required. Mary Cassat, Eduard Manet, Camille Pissaro and Edward Degas are among the participating artists. Rick Moore Fine Art has an inventory that includes recent works by established international artists as well as works by new artists. Suzanne French Luker will be the featured artist from 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 20 and from noon to 4 p.m. Feb. 21. Maria Bertran is the featured artist from 6 to 9 p.m. March 5 and from noon to 4 p.m. March 6. In addition, current exhibits include paintings, sculpture and fine art glass and featuring new works by leading American impressionists Howard Behrens, Henrietta Milan, Suzanne French Luker and Maria Bertran. Schiowitz Sculpture, featuring the work of international artist Henry Schiowitz, hosts a grand opening today through Sunday, Feb. 20, 21 and 22. Hours are 5 to 9 p.m. today, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. The exhibit will include selections from 30 years of sculpture, created in bronze, marble, granite and mixed media.
