Get Out!

Fun things to do on and around Marco from June 11-17.

Flicks

High flying actress Nicole Kidman headlines the remake of The Stepford Wives (PG), which opens today at Marco Movies. Billed as a comedy/thriller, it takes place in a small town where every wife is perfect — almost too perfect, in fact. Bette Midler and a host of other big names also star.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (PG) is sitting box-office pretty on the strength of reviews such as "deeper, darker and more visually arresting" than the first two, while The Day After Tomorrow (PG-13) is a guilty visual pleasure with the destruction of Los Angeles and a tidal wave engulfing the Big Apple when the elements go haywire. As for the story, nah.

Despite being generally written off as predictable, Raising Helen (PG-13) continues to attract audiences with its premise of a young woman (Kate Hudson) suddenly placed in a surrogate mother position to three children.

If you're still undecided on what to watch, look no further than Shrek 2 (PG), the jaunty animated comedy featuring the voices of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Antonio Banderas. The movie obviously doesn't have the unique magnetism of the original, but the gags are fresh, and Banderas' lecherous contribution as Puss in Boots is hilarious. One for the kids, and for the kid in all of us.

Hungry?

They say all good things come to those who wait and now — drum roll please! — the waiting is over and I can indulge my wildest seafood — NO, no, wait — I was going to say pig out, but if it's fish you're pigging out on, wouldn't that be a "fish out?" Never mind, I just wanted to let you know that the Snook Inn is again offering its World Famous Seafood Buffet on Thursday and Friday, including Alaskan queen crab legs. Life just doesn't get any better when I can fill a plate with delectable crab legs again, and again, and ... I'm sure you get my drift. See ya tonight, but get there early and expect to wait 'cause they don't take reservations. The Snook Inn is at 1215 Bald Eagle Drive. Phone: 394-3313.

A side of music

Just because tourism is slowing down doesn't mean the entertainment schedule at the reliable Porky's is. Friday nights the restaurant still brings in girl group Jezebelle for their funky, jammin' dance tunes in tight pants; Saturday is the Real Deal, so named because the group's slogan and mission statement — "Rockin' for real" — complements my own theory that music is best played all-live. They bring their blend of '50s, '60s, and '70s rock to the Marco barbecue joint every other weekend. And Monday is the slightly scatological laugh riot G. David Howard for Porky's regular stand-up comedy night.

Just do it

It takes some real stamina to participate in a run/walk fund-raiser on Marco Island in June. Those who make it through without melting have every right to boast about it on Monday morning.

The Marco Island YMCA 5K Run and 1 Mile Run/Walk is a chance to earn some braggin' rights, maybe drop a pound or two and — oh, yeah — raise some money for a good cause.

The walk/run starts at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, June 12, at the Y, 101 Sandhill St. You can pick up a race packet from noon to 8 p.m. today, June 11, at the Y, or on Saturday before the race. Cost is $25 for adults, $15 for youth/high school students. For more information, call the Marco Island YMCA at 394-3144, ext. 275
